A six acre estate was totally renovated and included an extensive addition, a second driveway access, a pool house, a heated pool with waterfalls and dive rock, and a hornbeam allee leading to an oval lawn and tea house. Over two hundred mature trees were planted, a twenty-five foot magnolia was relocated, and over two acres of perennials and groundcovers were established to create a one of a kind resort like environment. A sixteen-foot by sixty-foot courtyard was transformed from an unusable outdoor space to a true outdoor room. Two large trees were preserved while the entire drainage, irrigation and lighting systems were replaced and updated. A series of terraces and stairs lead to the main entertainment space which is surrounded by seasonally and texturally interesting plantings. The views within were enhanced as well as the views down onto the garden from above. The inside extends outside easily and comfortably.

A new stone home is seamlessly fitted to the rural countryside including an existing barn. A new driveway serpentines its way to the compound and terminates at a courtyard framed by the structures old and new. Plantings were simple and were placed to reinforce the linkage established between the structures and the site. Several large existing trees were preserved and frame the farmland views that extend from the house. The landscape compliments the relaxed retreat-like country setting.

This new home was recently built on an existing one-third acre waterfront property with spectacular views to the Magothy River and Chesapeake Bay. State environmental requirements for waterfront property include maximizing native plants and minimizing impervious area. The result is two distinct landscape characters that when juxtaposed with each other reinforce the sense of place…. strong architectural arrangements of plantings in the front and organic arrangement of plantings and terraces in the rear. The bosque of Crepe Myrtle reduce the scale of the front of the house improving the sense of welcome. An eleven by nineteen foot heated pool and spa with a swim jet fits into the terraces and overlooks the bay. Click here to view master plan and photographs for this project.
